Internationally renowned veterinarian, Dr Rachel Murray, is to give an evening talk to equine enthusiasts at Nottingham Trent University's Brackenhurst campus. Based at the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket, her expertise lies in the areas of sport horse training, performance and the prevention of injury.

In addition, Rachel works for the British Equestrian Federation providing scientific advice for the World Class Performance squads and as veterinary surgeon for the British dressage team.

Lameness remains one of the most common causes of both poor performance and inability to compete in equine athletes – whether Olympic level performers or recreational horses.

During the course of the lecture, Rachel will examine the factors that predispose the equine to injury and will look at specific training methods relating to each equine discipline.

Having graduated in veterinary medicine from the University of Cambridge, Rachel specialised in equine surgery. She spent time working abroad before returning to England to become equine surgeon to the University and subsequently completed a Ph.D. investigating exercise-associated injuries in horses.

Rachel has ridden across a variety of equine sports including competing to Grand Prix level in dressage. Her interests in training and performance are fuelled by her experiences as a competitor. She is married to another vet and has two daughters who are keen equine enthusiasts.

Head of the University’s Animal and Equine faculty, Heather Owen said: “We are delighted that Rachel  is visiting Brackenhurst to enable students and members of the equine community to benefit from her deep knowledge and wide experience. Equine injury is a particular point of focus for the School’s Equine Sports Science provision, so we are keenly anticipating a most interesting event.”
